INTRO:

Pierre was born in 1952 in Stilfontein, a small mining town in the then Western Transvaal. Well, actually he was “delivered” in nearby Klerksdorp, since Stilfontein had no maternity facilities.

He had a happy childhood in a family of five – being the third of three boys. His mother and father both worked on the mines – “above ground”. (Photo to the right shows my parents on her Dad’s farm).

Growing up:

Pierre hated going to pre-primary school and cried so much his parents was forced to take him out. He then stayed at home with heir maid and her son. He spent one year at Stilfontein Primary School and the rest at P.A. Theron Primary School. Pierre did not really like or enjoy his school years. To this day he dislikes groups of people. The accompanying photo shows him during these years. (No wonder he still refuses to have his top button buttoned-up).
The photo to the left shows the young family with an unknown girl between his two brothers.

Music:

During his late primary school years Pierre discovered (with the rest of his family), fifties Rock ‘n Roll music. Still to this day, whenever he hears a fifties record he gets a smile and a far-away look on his face. Pop music (particularly the Sixties – the British Invasion) would stay one of his loves. Although he still listens to older bands like The Rolling Stones, Beatles, Hollies, Small Faces, Pink Floyd, Eric Burdon and the Animals, The Doors, the Kinks, The Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen, U2 – he now listens, with the help of his drummer-son – to bands like Tool, Deftones, System of a Down, Radiohead and Muse.

Drumming:

High school was spent at Stilfontein High School. He can’t remember much of those years except boredom (school), girls, and discovering drums. Less success with the female species (he was and still is very shy when it comes to the opposite sex) which probably lead to more success as a drummer. He became addicted to drumming and tried to rehearse and practise non-stop – a practise that drove his family, friends and teachers to madness. It still does, says wife, Sandra). A high point in Pierre’s high school years was when he acquired a Ludwig drum set, and some Zildjian cymbals. (The set now belongs to his son).

Student:

Pierre studied Drama at Potchefstroom University and also attended Commando Training in the Army (hated it!). He enjoyed his student years – one man among a dozen girls, and although he was bent on becoming a muso, slowly the art of acting won him over. For the rest of his career see “Professional History”.
